Open Letter from Sami Yusuf to Yvonne Ridley
Dear Yvonne,
Peace and blessings of God be upon you.
Your recent article on ‘Pop Culture in the Name of Islam’ has been brought to my attention. I commend you for voicing your opinion and raising some very important issues – albeit in a very provocative manner. I thought it would be useful to share some of my thoughts with you on this matter.
As a Muslim artist, I regularly seek clarification and advice from world-renowned scholars on art, music, singing and culture. Be informed that the subject of music is one of the most controversial topics in Islamic Jurisprudence. I respect those who consider music to be haram. Yes eminent scholars of our past have opined such. However, I respect and follow the opinion of other eminent scholars – classical and contemporary, who permit singing and the use of musical instruments. The well-established jurisprudential rule states that ‘in matters where there is ikhtilaf (differences of opinion) there is to be no condemnation of either opinion.’ This is from the beauty of the religion of Islam. The diversity of our cultural, legal and social traditions is something we are in dire need of celebrating not condemning. So let’s agree to disagree on this one.
The obsessive fascination of fans towards any celebrity – be it in arts, music, politics, media, etc – to the point of hysteria and hero-worshipping is definitely unhealthy not to mention un-Islamic. Of course, as Muslims, we are required to abide by certain etiquettes in whatever situation we may find ourselves in. However, I definitely did not see girls dancing or behaving indecently in any of my concerts. To state otherwise is a gross exaggeration if not an outright fallacy. And if indeed that did take place then let’s deal with it in the true Prophetic tradition – a tradition that imparts love, mercy, tolerance and wisdom. Let me share with you the story of the Bedouin who came to the Prophet’s mosque and started urinating in the mosque itself. The Companions rushed to grab him and give him a ‘good beating.’ But the Prophet did not allow them to do so and told them to let him be. After the Bedouin had urinated, the Prophet asked his Companions to bring a bucket of water and wash the place. Afterwards he called the man and with gentleness and affection explained to him that this was a place of worship and that it should be kept clean. Though I have to say that had the Bedouin been around today he would be lucky to get away with just a ‘good beating’!
Indeed the state of contemporary mainstream music is one dominated by celebrity worship, materialism and the constant promotion of a consumerist culture that seeks only to derive instant emotional and physical gratification. The arts industry in general – and the music industry specifically – is being commercialised at the expense of art itself. We don’t value good art or good music anymore – it’s about what can sell most in the market. In the midst of all this, it is upon all conscious and responsible artists who look beyond the commercial to work in refining arts and music. Apart from entertaining audiences, music is a powerful medium to communicate values and social messages. In these times where heinous crimes against humanity are being committed, we as artists – Muslims or non-Muslims, British or non-British – have a duty to use this medium to bring some sanity to this world of unrest, fear, violence, terror and war. Human life and dignity are values that should be cherished and championed by all. Had you listened carefully to the songs in my latest album which is actually entitled ‘My Ummah’ before hastily passing judgements, you would have noticed my modest attempt at addressing issues facing the global Muslim community – such as regaining our lost legacy in all spheres of human life, oppression in different parts of the Muslim world, Aids, landmines, poverty and freedom to wear the hijab.
This leads me to another important issue which you raised – that of identity and culture. Who are we? How do we define ourselves? What do we stand for? Let me remind you again – I am a British Muslim. Proud to be Muslim and proud to be British! Why? Because this is what Islam teaches me to be – loyal towards my faith and my country. Throughout our rich history, wherever Muslims settled they adopted and fused the best aspects of the local culture/society with Islamic teachings and traditions. As Dr. Umar Faruq Abdallah, a leading American Muslim scholar and thinker writes in ‘Islam the Cultural Imperative’:
In history, Islam showed itself to be culturally friendly and, in that regard, has been likened to a crystal clear river. Its waters (Islam) are pure, sweet, and life-giving but—having no color of their own—reflect the bedrock (indigenous culture) over which they flow. In China, Islam looked Chinese; in Mali, it looked African. Sustained cultural relevance to distinct peoples, diverse places, and different times underlay Islam’s long success as a global civilization.
At a time when leading Muslim scholars and thinkers have reached an advanced stage in crystallising theories of citizenship and positive integration into Western societies, any discussion of renouncing parts of our identity is simply ridiculous, dangerous and destructive – especially for someone who has no other homeland. Such emotional fist-pumping and chest-pounding about renouncing our British identity may seem attractive to a minority of Muslim youth, but as Muslims in positions of influence like yourself, we should not play to these base instincts. Rather, we should try to be more far-sighted and responsible in our discourse and not sacrifice this in the pursuit of tabloid-style sensationalist journalism.
Do you not see the Prophet of Islam shedding tears whilst migrating from Makkah – his beloved homeland to Madina despite the persecution he suffered at the hands of its people. Britain is my home. I was raised here as a child, I went to school here, most of my friends – Muslims and non-Muslims – are British and my earliest as well as fondest memories are rooted here. Does being British mean I take pride in the oppressive and exploitative colonial past of Britain? Does it mean I support the British invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq? Does it mean I support the Anti-Terrorism Act? Does it mean I support the erosion of civil liberties and human rights? Of course not! But Yvonne, let us be fair and not forget that it was in Britain that the world witnessed the largest anti-war demonstration – a testimony to the moral consciousness of the British public. I too was in that demonstration voicing my discontent over the foreign policies of our government. Although we have our fair share of racism, Islamophobia, discrimination, under-representation – and in no way am I claiming that we live in a utopian society, but I still believe that British society is amongst the most tolerant, open, liberal, multi-cultural and inclusive societies in the world. We don’t need to go far but Muslims in the Continent would envy the liberties and opportunities that British Muslims take for granted. Actually the real debate that needs to take place is how are we to shape this emerging British / European / Western Muslim identity and what direction it should take. I see my work a humble contribution towards that end.
You are critical of my mention that the Metropolitan Police is inclusive of Muslims. By God, who are you depending on to protect and safeguard our streets? Yes, there is no doubt that the Metropolitan Police have committed a series of grave mistakes and blunders – the recent Forest Gate incident is one such example and the Police must be held fully accountable for their actions. But we as Britons and Muslims have a religious and civic obligation to help maintain a safe and secure Britain. This actually raises serious questions about the participation of British Muslims not just in the Metropolitan Police but in mainstream civil society. We have three options as a community: [1] To assimilate and lose our cultural, ethnic and even religious roots. [2] To ghettoise and divorce ourselves from society and face extermination. [3] To positively integrate and contribute to society whilst remaining loyal to both faith and country. I – like the vast majority Muslims – have chosen option three. We need to build trust and partnerships with civil institutions and engage with them. This path entails that we be active members in our communities and societies; that we participate at all levels of society from politics to sports, from academia to arts, from business to media; that we reserve and exercise the right of dissent and criticism; that we join our fellow citizens in building a safe, peaceful, tolerant and pluralistic society that embodies the values of freedom and justice. Thus I commend you for standing in the last European Elections, General Elections and the recent Council Elections as a candidate in order to get your views heard, to make an impact, and to represent British people – although I hope you have better luck next time. Positive engagement – not anarchist ranting -– is the path we must tread.
It is true that the state of the global Muslim community is saddening but are we meant to live in perpetual grieving and lamenting and dress in black? Despite all the oppression and persecution suffered by the Prophet, he would always find time to celebrate the different joyful moments in life such as marriages, births, Eids and other happy occasions. He, peace and blessings of God be upon him, also found time to enjoy poetry and even had appointed a personal poet – the notable companion Hassan ibn Thabit.
Maintaining balance and adopting the middle way is the key in these troubled times of ours. Extremism and extremists have no place in Islam and in our civil societies. “Perished are the extremists” is a famous Prophetic tradition. Extremism is not a problem unique to Islam. Every religion, every way of life, every ideology has its puritans and those willing to distort and misinterpret it to meet their own agenda. And these are no different to those that commit acts of terror, who preach extremism, and who sow seeds of hatred in the name if Islam. There is no denying that Muslims in places like Palestine, Iraq, Kashmir and Chechnya are facing oppression and tragedy every day, and both the Muslim world and the West need to come together to solve these problems in the greater interest of humanity. Western governments in particular must understand that to help the majority of Muslims defeat the minority of extremists, they must assist us in eradicating the daily humiliation faced by Muslims across many parts of the world. Ending this humiliation is the only way forward for us.
You have every right to criticise and disagree with me or anyone else for that matter, and I always welcome any advice and constructive criticism for I know my defects and shortcomings are many. I am guided by the ancient wisdom which states ‘May God have mercy on the one who shows me my defects – for that is the best gift he could give me.’ However, in the Islamic tradition there are adab (ethics) of criticism and disagreement. I know you wrote your article with sincerity and zeal, but on a more personal level, I was deeply pained and saddened by the hostile tone and the vulgar style of your language that was brimming with sarcasm and was clearly un-Islamic, indecent and a gross violation of the beautiful teachings of our beloved Prophet who said “I was not sent except to perfect your manners.” Using words such as “astagfirullah dude,” “lap-dancing,” ‘whooping and dancing,” and describing the volunteer stewards as “pipe cleaners” and “bulldozers” are inappropriate to say the very least. What shocked and even angered me was the way you shamelessly insulted our pure innocent sisters who were supporting a charity concert by describing them as “fluffers”! (Incidentally, these very sisters managed to raise over £100,000 for orphans all over the world.) I – like the vast majority of those who read your article – was blissfully ignorant about the very existence of this disgusting obscene word, and I would question the wisdom of introducing it to the vocabulary of your readers. As to my performances, I always consciously endeavour to be responsible, respectable, modest and dignified on stage.
It has been my approach that whenever personal criticism is levelled at me I ignore it and get on with my work, as my philosophy in life is to build and not destroy, and to unite not divide. However, on this occasion I felt duty-bound to respond because of the dangerous ideas and notions contained in your article. Yvonne, let us work together as fellow Muslims and Britons in building a better future for our community and all human beings and strive to make our world a safer, more peaceful, tolerant and prosperous place.
Yours faithfully,
Sami Yusuf

AssalaamuAlaikum ; i strongly feel that whatever sister yvonne has mentioned in her article is 100% true. lets look at the islamic background and then judge, almost ALL the scholars have labelled music as HARAM. sister being a new revert was able to understand this. i too listen to sami yusuf’s songs n frankly i really love them but if u ponder over what sister has said with an open mind then ur concience and inner self will tell u what the truth is (only if you are very much inclined towards islam). i think most of yusuf islam’s and zain bhika’s songs are without music or with a very light and pleasant music, but most of sami yusuf’s songs contain heavy music exactly like the other unislamic songs. i am definitely not against sami yusuf but am just presenting my views.

First of all i would like to mentioned that we are muslim and the word “fan” as our sister Hava said to brother Sami really not much for muslim girl,so shame that today muslims can be fan for the singers of anasheds. We can be fanatic for Allahy Subhana ya taala, for our Diin Islaam, but not for singers and them anasheeds.
Just think about that..
And brother Sami you voice is so nice to read Koran, the better thing in the way of Daya(you
are think the singing with the musik
is nice and not haraam ,but famous scolars in Islaam, and ahadeets says about how is haraam in our Diin )
so
way not to do
that ,and why let Shaitan to play with muslim girls by your voice???
Think about o my brother..
Surah 41. Fussilat – Ayah 33
And who is better in speech than he who invites to Allaah
and does righteous deeds, and says: “I am one of the Muslims.”
Surah 16. An Nahl – Ayah 125
Invite to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and fair preaching,
and argue with them in a way that is better.
Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path,
and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided

A’salamu A’alaykum,
I hope this message finds all it’s readers in the best of health, iman and taqwa insh’allah.
I would just like to say that Allahu Aalim on the subject of music- for even the scholars- as Br. Sami mentioned- are conflicted on the issue. I would like to begin by saying that I think the manner in which the br.Sami dealt with the onslaught is commendable. Mash’allah.
As for Sr.Yvonne, she is a very committed, hardworking and sincere sister- and anyone who knows her will agree- i myself speak from personal experience. But like most people she will undoubtedly make mistakes. I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with her on the issue of music-but merely referring to the way in which she used her talent as a writer/Journalist. She lacked diplomacy to say the least- but then i suppose her success lies in her forthright, no nonsense attitude. However, as naseeha to her and all those who read the article- every living soul has the right to their opinion-however like the rasool( saw) mentioned in numerous hadith- there are certain etiquettes that needs to be observed while doing so. Whether a person agrees or disagrees with the br.Sami- you have to admire the way in which he tackled the situation.
Both Yvonne and Sami are very talented individuals who have alot to contribute to the ummah- the only difference being that they have chosen different methods.
May Allah guide them and guide us Insh’allah,
Fi Amanillah

Muslims in the UK and all over the world are increasingly becoming targets for racists in many forms. The word ‘Islamophobia’ has been created and is used more so than ever as part of everyday language for the media, politicians, and your next door neighbour. The British National Party (BNP) declared the local elections that took place in May to be ‘a referendum on Islam’. All of this is unacceptable. Love Music Hate Racism works closely with Unite Against Facism, together we put on events across the UK to promote our fundamental message that any form of racism is unacceptable.
Sadiq Khan MP:
“The BNP now has 14 councillors in London, and have gained ground on the back of a rise in racism. In the recent, council elections, the BNP declared that this was a “referendum on Islam”, and they are dividing communities with vicious, racist lies.
It is vital that we tackle the BNP head on and start a united campaign now to stop them making further electoral gains in the 2008 Greater London Assembly elections – the work of Love Music, Hate Racism is vital in celebrating diversity, not extremism. We have to out the BNP for what they really stand for, build strong coalitions of support, and ensure that we involve all communities in a shared and inclusive notion of what it means to be British in the 21st century.”
If you feel you should make a stand for Muslims, want to make a point about racism, or want to know know more about Islamphobia then support the first ever Love Music Hate Islamophobia event.

Assalamu Alaikum,
Some Muslims are a joke like fans of Sami Yusuf and ppl promoting haram things like music. Go check Al-Bukharee, the prophet (SAW) said “Amongst my ummah there will be people who allow fornication, riba, drinking of alcohol…and the use of musical instruments…”. You don’t need to be scholar to realise this. And anyone backing music are misguided and may Allah guide them to the straight path.

Sister Yvonne proclaimed the truth in the words of our beloved Rasullullah (Sallallahu alayhe wassallam)
“There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful fornication…wine drinking..and the use of MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS” (Bhukhari)
Indeed people will go to any lengths in justifying wrong/haraam. In the name of Dawa, integration(based on subjective premise),fundraising through illicit means, isolated and unrelated instances of a bedouin urinating in a masjid etc…they barter away the beautiful Deen al Islam for a miserable price!!!!!
How I wonder is Yvonne supposed to “integrate” when she comes from the indegenous community of this country.
There are countless ways to contribute, positively integrate in a country without compromising ones faith.
Sami yusuf confuses personal sin with PROMOTING DOUBTFUL AND HARAAM THINGS.
Yvonne does not target him personally but target criticism of what he promotes in the garb of Islam.
May Allah Taala Guide us all to Seeratul Mustaqeem.

Sister Yvonne is right! It angers me to think these people are comitting Kuffur in the name of Islam. People like Sami Yusuf and 786 and misguiding our Muslim brothers and siters with Haram Trash!
I am pretty sure if I was to say that Tupac’s music is Halal because he raps about the challenges and difficulty of life, there would be an uproar, even from the people who are defending the likes of Sami Yusuf and 786! The fact is that these people are trying to change Islam, they have strayed from the Seerathal Mustqim.

Firstly i get everyones concerns regarding music being haram etc. But if u look into what these urdu nasheed singers who dont use music but use the kalima an Allah swt’s name as a background rhythem, personally i’m disgusted by it because its wrong an is disrespectful, but mufti’s hav said its ok 2 do that as long as theres no music.. Why? Theres no difference, were as sami yusuf’s intention is that hes trying to get peoples attention towards islam not kufar. Eg Al-muallim
Siraaj Muhammad said
Salaam alaykum Jabeen,
I think Sami Yusuf does the same thing. In any event, assuming that what the Urdu Nasheed singers do without music is wrong, Sami Yusuf’s using music to sing about Islam and being better doesn’t make him right, or even better.

I have to add to this that I have played drums for 9 years of my life and after coming back to my religion (Islam) I would very much lean toward Yvonnes statements as playing percussion is only for one thing and one thing only, to move and dance (which is not for the muslims). Your voice is marshallah (so why don’t you just get some extra back-up brothers and use that in concert (harmony without percussion). No jumping, dancing, just listen to the good words that you say. I have now sold my drums and Alhumdulilah it’s the best thing I’ve done and when you’ve been there and (may Allah the forgiver, forgive me) done that you can see it’s haram to use these instruments and you feel it in yourself that when not liserning it truly is the right way and the guided way! As I’ve heard before from a Sheik that when your not sure on a subject or as you say “difference of opinion” on a matter, it is best to lean toward the more strick fatwa inshallah. May Allah guide all of us to the best of paths and keep us strong! Ameen.
EXAMPLE:
It’s like when you ask “Does that contain Alcohol”, and your reply “Not sure, theres a difference of opinion on that issue”, do you lean towards buying the product (not being sure) or do you stay away fearing Allah incase it’s haram? I know what I would do…………….Lets go!

However, it is strange to see how you came to this conclusion. On what grounds did you decide to follow those who said it is halal? Could you explain why you did not follow those who say it is haram? Or is just based on how you felt like? I would like you to refer to the hadith below
Hadith – Sahih Al-Bukhari 3.267, Narrated An Numan bin Bashir
The Prophet [sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam] said “Both legal and illegal things are obvious, and in between them are (suspicious) doubtful matters. So whoever forsakes those doubtful things lest he may commit a sin, will definitely avoid what is clearly illegal; and whoever indulges in these (suspicious) doubtful things bravely, is likely to commit what is clearly illegal. Sins are Allah’s Hima (i.e. private pasture) and whoever pastures (his sheep) near it, is likely to get in it at any moment.”
It is pretty clear that this issue falls under what the hadith is referring. So I urge you to do what Rasulullah taught us, i.e to avoid doubtful issues unless absolutely necessary.
Also, I did not see any scholar saying music (without instruments) is haram, but of coz, I have not read everything. So, why don’t you just have your songs without instruments? Isn’t it obvious what reactions/feelings musical instruments bring about? Can you honestly ignore the fact that musical instruments can lead to haram brother? I have seen girls in Asia dancing to the musical beats of anasheed, which they have no idea what is being mentioned in them! Honestly brother, you can surely think of better ways to serve Islam with your talents without musical instruments. Why would you want to be another person who increases controversy among Muslims? We need less of that at the moment.
Lastly, forgive me if I have offended in any way with my comments.
Fi amanillah wassalam alaikum,

Something that I experienced approximately 18 months ago…
My daughter maashaaAllaah is quite the academic alhamduli’L-Laah.
She was star pupil of her madrasah class for the year.
She was given a show bag as a present, which contained a Sami Yusuf CD.
I was against the CD being listened to, as I am of the opinion that music is Haraam.
Somehow, they found a track that only had vocals in it. So, I said ok to it, only!
After around 10-20 seconds into it, a techno theme boomed out of the speakers, to which my wife started gyrating her hips! A`oodhubi’L-Laah!
I looked at my wife incredulously and asked, “Do you realise what you are dancing to?”
Alhamduli’L-Laah, we never listened to Sami Yusuf ever again.

why do people love the artists, it’s the music that you listen to, you don’t even know the person in real life so you can’t just assume that the person singing is the best person in the world because you love what they produce!! if people are going to love, don’t you think it should be the music and not the artists??? Personally, i think that Sami Yusuf has a very nice voice and produces some good nasheeds.

I agree that music is Haram. But I also agree with brother Same Yusuf that we have to have adab (ethics) when talking to each other even when disagreement arise. I like his approach answering sister Yvonne, it is an Islamic approach and that makes people like him more, because attacking him is not an Islamic way, regardless what the mistake is. I like what one of the brothers propose to brother Sami, sing with out the instrume. Just from reading all the people’s openion makes it heavey on me personally. It was hard to process what music might lead to. I remember the Hadith of profit Mohammed Peace be upon him, “ehtharo al shobohat” Although our deen is balanced, and not makes it hard on us, but there are certain things that are clear. Many Hadiths told us in regard to music. At this point, it does not matter what scholars say today in issues that profit Mohammad peace be upon him had already told us.
I do not listen to music alhamdolelah, however, i listen to brother Sami Yusuf because I thought that some of his CDs are with out instrument. But if they all do it will be a problem. Therefore, as a Muslim we shoud give an advice to other Muslim, and at this point I would advice brother Sami not to use music in his future songs because I know brother that you have a big influence on many brothers and sister today especilly the one who live in he west, so please re visit that fatwa that that pro music said. What ever they have said to back their arguments it cannot be compaired with the oroginal hadiths from sahih Bokhary and Muslim in this matter.
Thank you and may Allah bleese you and show you the right bath and help Islam spread futher.
I also want to thank yu for the song about the Hejab. I have already used it in one of my presentations about Muslim women.

Think about it. Music is not haram.
Listen to the world around you. Birds sing. The wind has a singing sound towards it, everything sings.
I know that everybody who listens to Sami’s music will fall in love with it, and Allah and the Prophets.
There is nothing haram in that. you cant deny it.

Muslim said
some say: HARAM
some say: HALAL
Honestly, we can sit forever saying HARAM HALAL but to no avail.
The Ummah will continue to make allowances until Islam becomes unrecognisable.
We can not stop it. Sami Yusuf will just write another beautiful message filled with truths & falsehoods. Nothing is clear anymore.
(to paraphrase a hadith) Holding onto the right way will be more difficult then holding on to a burning coal.
I have met many fans of Sami Yusuf and other modern artists. And honestly they treat the issue very similar to the way they treat any other Music Artist. Its just an addition to their collection of Music. It makes them feel more Muslim and that they are Ok. There are Positives and Negatives to modern anasheed. But…remember Allah & remember Muhammad sws the honorable man who lived and died humbley and in that you can see truth. You need not always look for HALAL & HARAM answers. Many scholars can be wrong as well, they are not God. Many many have went astray.
So will I be going to a Sami Yusuf concert, will I promote it to other muslims … No.
He is our brother just as all brothers, has positives and negatives. Many people remember al-Andalous Islamic Spain with many positives…but we forget the negatives and how muslims started to go astray the same way Sami Yusuf and other singers start to go astray until Islam is unrecognisable…until we are lulled to sleep and contentment in what we are, never striving to be better, just making more allowances halal halal even things that are clearly haram. Positives and Negatives.
Muslim said
…also I would like to point out an Islamic term to us all.
…its called “Gheerah” or “Ghirah”
…it can be translated as “protective jealousy”
…not to be confused with “Hasad” which is “envy jealousy” and totally negative
…modern psychologists have confused Gheerah & Hasad but alhamdulillah our deen teaches us correctly the difference
….to modern psychologists all kinds of jealousy springs from distrust…so they advise all man to remain unjealous under any circumstance regarding the women in their lives and if you read from the great scholars of psychology you will see they really mean Under Any Circumstance. Even a married wife seen by her husband as she embraces another man.
…The problem is modern society has so many positives such as doing away with class system (of course its still there) but I mean to the point of castes. Now money is the main class system. And no one cares if your father was employed in a lowly job. This is a positive. Anti-racism this is a positive. Equality of races this is a positive.
…But one thing that went backward is doing away with Gheerah or Protective Jealousy. To see ones wife or daughter uncovered should spark gheerah. But it doesnt, if it did most men would advise them to wear hijab, but they dont. It is said a pig has no gheerah.
…To see ones wife or daughter adore a music singer, which is what Sami Yusuf is, should also spark gheerah. But it doesnt. To see ones daughter post photos of him or any other singer on her bedroom wall, should spark gheerah. But it doesnt.
…There is something deeper then just 2 stated words HALAL – HARAM. There is something much deeper that proves who we are as a people. Proves our heart sickness. Our weakness. People like to belittle things…saying “its not a big deal” but if you have a big disease you will take a big remedy, but what about a small flu? Would you not take anything? Even a small flu you will take medicine. Dont belittle a small sickness, it can spread and get worse.

While I wholeheartedly agree with brother Sami Yusuf’s response. I do see where Sister Ridley gets her argument from. Sami Yusuf needs to realize that and inshallah convey in his shows that he’s not a rock star or a celebrity and he is doing it because he feels it is for the sake of Allah. I am not going to go to extremes and accuse this brother of anything, but there are sisters who let their voices be heard. This whooping and hollering is not allowed in Islam, be it men or women.
This brother should let his listeners know this.

Assalamu’alaikum Sami Yusuf, Ivonne, and all muslims brothers and sisters, I think that singing the praises of Allah and His Noble Messenger Sallallahu’alaihi Wa Aalihi Wasallam is not Haram, but commendable although there’s Music in it.We cant say that Sami Yusuf is dealing with Haraam. Its better to listen to Nasheeds rather than listening to Hollywood and Bollywood songs. Sami Yusuf is doing a great work by giving a very good picture of Islam in a world where Islam has been disfigured by the Media. He did not said that Music should be brought in Masjid. In Masjid we sing islamic songs without music. The Prophet Sallallahu’alaihi Wa Aalihi Wasallam said that music is Haram, but on some other occasion, He allowed it. Music dedicated to pagan gods and goddesses are really Haram. Music that incite us into sin is also Haraam. But Music that increase your Love for Allah and His Beloved Nabi Sallallahu’alaihi Wa Aalihi Wasallam will not be Haraam. May Almighty Allah bless us all and guide us on the right path. This was my opinion on this matter, I ask Allah and His Prophet for forgiveness if I’ve said anything wrong. I really appreciated how Sami Yusuf answered Ivonne. I also appreciate the concern of ivonne for Islam, but did not appreciate some of the words used by her.

As it is clear from the hadheeth Al-Bukharee, mentioned above that the prophet (SAW) said “Amongst my ummah there will be people who allow fornication, riba, drinking of alcohol…and the use of musical instruments…”. Then how a Muslim can knowingly do it.
So long as what other culture do (other religions)on music for their entertainment or for their mental peace, then a Muslim does not require such things to attain what they attain from it but a muslim could feel all practically from his practical belief relying on the creator. Because Islam is only a religion which practically bring people into the right path. There is no place for any imitation or ecstasy by listening voice with music. Allah created us very beautifully without any fault but it is absolutely complete creation. If anyone want to sing a song, his beautiful voice is more than enough without any man made instrument. If the voice is supported with the instrument, then people enjoying only the musical sound which supported with singer voice thus it makes people in ecstasy. Human sound are best over everything, it has no comparison. Allah is the best creator who created all with his wise and we could not see any fault in it.
so succintly, if we listening the best reciting of Quran, we would be wonder, how it takes our mind into a peaceful situation even we don’t know its meaning. this is how Quran brings the human into a practical listening. It does not require any other support because it is itself is absolute, no instrument required as other religions do.
So, think practically, and get away from ambiguity and doubtful.
Better to create a different atmosphere in Singng and make people to listen pure singing without any supportive musical noice.
Allah guide those who seek his truth.
Najeer said
In addition to the above, Loving Allah and Rasool, is not by Singing like others do but in Islam, Allah Almighty want us to act upon whenever and wherever the people require help as this is the ultimate purpose of this creation. The difference between other religion and Islam is clear from this. Allah is looking on what you do. we cannot sitback with our comfortness While there are many people who suffer with many reasons such as poverty, sickness….Allah does not create human for something to enjoy but to worship, (here worship does not take as others worship, in Islam it is practical in all level, the belief leads to action where it is required)

I hope that I do not offend those of you who think that music is haram, but in my opinion, you should follow the Quran, and the Quran only. There is nothing in the quran to condemn the use of music. Forget all of these false hadiths. The Quran is the one and only true book of Allah. Look at it this way as well. As long as the music doesnt interfear with daily worshiping and fasting, I see nothing haram about it. Now on the other hand, the Western music about all of these horribly haram subjects is best to stay away from. Also Sami Yusuf is spreading the message of islam to the world, nothing haram about that. So those of you who do not like his music or his message, please, spare the rest of us and please quit bashing him.
Keep up the excellent work Sami Yusuf!

This comment should actually be at the top!!!
Music is haraam but be honest how many of us can say that we dont listen to it??? or enjoy it???
What Sami does is touch the people who are already doing haraam but changes their mind set, makes them proud to be muslim and makes them remember Allah, teaches them Durood!!!
This is exactly what happened to me – when I watch or listen to Al Mu’Allim I feel so proud to be Muslim. And I am always reciting the Durood in Supplication.
So I say what Sami does is effective in a positive way so let him be – Society needs him!!!
And as for girls at his concert – Im a girl and Ive been to his concert, and I was very well behaved and so were all the rest of the girls!!!
Im sure everyone would rather us girls fancy someone with morals like Sami Yusuf rather then Shah Rukh Khan or David Bekham etc…

The problem is that Sami Yusuf is too arrogant to admit that his “bachelors” degree in music was nothing but a haram waste of trash.
And the arrogant claim that music is halal is nothing but an utter perverted lie against Islam and its principles.
For someone to claim “scholars” making it legal without mentioning their names is cowardly, ignorant-like and of course sly. Did any of the 4 imams say it is okay? Did any of the great students of Imam Abu Hanifa, Imam Shafee, Imam Malik, Imam Ahmad, Imam Al-awzaai, Ibn Taymiyyah, Abu Ayyub As-Sikhtiyaani and scholars allow this?

Amina, how can you say that the Hadith are false. Do you read Salaah by standing and reading Surah Faatiha and a surah, then going into ruku, then sajdah e.t.c.? the answer is yes, now only the establishment of Salaah is mentioned in the Quraan, every practical aspect comes from Hadith, so by refuting Hadith, you are refuting the practical aspect of Salaah. The kalimah is Laa ilaha illallahu Muhammadurrasoolullah. By refuting the Ahaadith, you have lost your Imaan. If you like music or any other forbidden act, than admit that although it is wrong, you enjoy it but don’t try justifying Haraam by refuting the truth as this is dangerous.

I am not an expert on Islamic teaching so my comments are not a reflection of our religions laws. They are just my personal opinion.
In life I think that if a problem or disagreement arises we should focus more on the solution than the problem.
With this in mind I think that:
1. Mr Yusuf should encourage females to stop dancing or idolising him at the concerts. (If this is happening)
2. Miss/Mrs Ridley should be more courteous in the expression of her views.
I hope this helps.

Whilst i am not an expert in Islam, I do believe that Islam is a way of life since this beautiful religion taught us everything (how to eat, sleep, relieve ourselves and the list goes on). All this is based on evidence from Quraan and Sunnah (Sunnah being the practice of our Nabi SAW which is found in Hadith) which our scholars have simplified for us. Versus of the Quraan must be understood in context and so must the Ahaadith. In many cases, something took place, and from there, revelation came. The same with Ahaadith. The requirement for a Hadith to be authentic, is that it must have a reliable chain of narrators back to Nabi (SAW) and this is called Sanad. Sahih Bukhari for example is very authentic as Imaam Bukhari was particular in ensuring the authenticity of a Hadeeth before recording it in his book. It is therefore quite clear that for us to practice Islam in totality, we must follow Quraan and Sunnah with the guidance of righteous Ulema. The problem we face in today’s times is that if the Quraan and Hadith suits our whims and fancies, we will accept it, but the minute it instructs us to do something contrary to our convenience, we refute it and find ways to justify our wrong by re-intepreting the Quraan aayah or the Hadith in question. The correct thing to do is to acknowledge our wrong, even if we carry on doing it. What I am saying is that we should stop trying to justify our wrong . Sami Yusuf himself tries to Justify music by stating in his letter to Yvonne that he has sought advice from scholoars, classical and contemporary and that there is a difference of opinion. He has not once, named the scholars, nor has he produced evidence in light of Quraan and Hadith to back his claim. Based on evidence, there is Ijmaa (consensus) amongst all our Fuqahaa, that Music is prohibited. If you listen to music, admit that it is wrong even if you continue doing it. don’t try and make a wrong a right.
Please see below evidence. Author of this is Moulana A.S. Desai.
40 AHAADITH on MUSIC
(1) Hadhrat Abu Maalik Ash’ari (radhiyallahu anhu) says that he heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) say: “Most certainly, there will be in my Ummah people who will make lawful fornication, silk, liquor and musical instruments.” (Bukhaari)
(2) In another version of this narration, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Most certainly, people from my Ummah will consume liquor which they will describe with some other name. Over their heads will be playing musical instruments and singing girls. Allah will cause the earth to swallow them, and from among them He will transform into apes and pigs.” (Ibn Maajah)
The punishment for music and singing is exceptionally severe. Some juhhaal (ignoramuses) have attempted to escape the condemnation of music and singing stated in this Hadith by presenting a very stupid argument. They argue that the punishment mentioned in this Hadith applies to a collective act which consists of four deeds, viz., fornication, silk, liquor and music.
It is their contention that musical instruments by themselves are not evil, hence not haraam. only when used together with the haraam acts will it also become haraam, hence the Hadith mentions it along with the other three sinful deeds. The logical conclusion of this absurd argument is that if fornication is committed in isolation of the other three deeds, it will be lawful. Similarly, if liquor is consumed alone, i.e. without the accompaniment of music, fornication, and silken garments, it will be halaal. Similarly, wearing silk will be permissible for males according to this ludicrous logic if it is unaccompanied by the other three acts. The absurdity of this fallacious argument is self-evident. There is no need for discussing it further.
This Hadith is an unambiguous assertion of the hurmat (being haraam/prohibition) of musical instruments. In this Hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) uses the word (Yasta-hil-loona, i.e. they will make lawful). He mentioned four acts which people in the later ages would make lawful, viz. fornication, liquor, silk and music. This presupposes that these acts are haraam. It is meaningless to say that a lawful act will be made lawful. This absurdity is the consequence of the stupid and false contention of the proponents of music and singing. A haraam act is made lawful, and this is precisely what Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said.
The time will dawn when Muslims will make halaal these four haraam acts. In fact, all four evils have already been made ‘halaal’ in Muslim lands and by Muslim communities all over the world. There is almost unanimity of the stupid masses and the juhhaal deviate modernists on the ‘permissibility’ of music and singing. Alcohol in a variety of forms and labels has been given the green light by even the Ulama in most countries. Males don silk without even having heard of its prohibition. Fornication is actively promoted in the form of legalized prostitution in Muslim countries and at secular educational institutions. The Bangladesh Supreme Court transgressed all limits of shamelessness by declaring that prostitutes have the right to earn a living by means of prostitution. This shaitaani court ordered the Bangladeshi government to release all imprisoned prostitutes and to refrain from hampering them in the filthy trade of their bodies. These lesser signs of Qiyaamah are materializing right in front of our eyes. In some quarters an attempt has been made to assail the authenticity of this Hadith. Much has been written by the authorities of the Shariah in vindication of this Hadith’s authenticity. Here it will suffice to say that this Hadith is highly authentic. It is bereft of any blemishes. The gravity of the chastisement – disfiguration and transformation into apes and swines – should be more than adequate to jolt Muslims into the realisation that music is a crime with which one dares not trifle.
(3) Imraan Bin Husain (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “In this Ummah will be earthquakes, disfiguration (of faces which will be transformed into apes and pigs) and showers of stone (descending on them from the heaven).” A man from among the Muslimeen said: “O Rasulullah! When will this be?” Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “When singing girls and musical instruments will become profuse and when liquor will be consumed (in abundance).”(Tirmizi)
(4) Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “During the last of ages (in close proximity to Qiyaamah) a nation from my Ummah will be disfigured (and transformed) into apes and pigs.” The Sahaabah said: “O Rasulullah! Will they be Muslim?” Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Yes. They will be testifying that there is no deity but Allah and that I am His Rasool, and they will be fasting (in the month of Ramadhaan).” The Sahaabah asked: “O Rasulullah! What will be their condition (to warrant such chastisement)?” Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “They will be indulging in musical instruments, singing girls, musical drums, and they will be consuming liquor. They will one night go to sleep after their liquor and amusement. When they arise in the morning, they will have been disfigured (and transformed into apes and pigs).” (Kaf-fur Ruaa’)
It is apparent from this Hadith that the musical drum (the tablah of the qawwaals) and similar other kinds of musical drums are not the duff mentioned in the Ahaadith. Musical drums have been declared haraam unanimously by all authorities from the very age of the Sahaabah.
(5) According to another Hadith, also narrated by Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu), Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “I take oath by The Being Who has sent me with the Haqq (Truth)! The world will not come to an end until earthquakes, the descent of showers of stones (from the heaven) and disfigurement of faces (which will be transformed into apes and swines) had not taken place.’ The Sahaabah said: ‘When will that happen, O Rasulullah?’ He replied: ‘When you see women seated on saddles (i.e. riding horses and in this age, driving cars); when singing girls are to be found in profusion; when false testimony becomes rampant, and when homosexuality and lesbianism become prevalent.” (Bazzaar and Tibraani)
All these evil deeds mentioned in this Hadith are widely prevalent in this age. Women driving vehicles has become a norm in even Muslim society. Music and singing have become accepted practices in even Muslim homes. Among the signs of Qiyaamah are the acts of music and singing which have permeated every facet of life. Even the pious people who are averse to music and singing are unable to protect their ears from the satanic din of music and singing which blares in the streets, in the shops, in the factories, in the planes, in the offices, on the cellphones and even in the public toilets.
Even the Musaajid are becoming proliferated with musical tunes of the confounded cellphones belonging to confounded people who have absolutely no fear and shame for Allah Ta’ala, no respect for His Musaajid and the musallis of the Musaajid. In flagrant violation and total disregard for the divine Shariah of Allah Ta’ala, Muslims in this age step out of the way to ensure that the ringing tone of their phones is the voice of shaitaan (music). And this evil is terribly defiling the holy atmosphere of Musjidul Haraam in Makkah and Musjidun Nabawi in Madinah. May Allah Ta’ala save us from His chastisement. We now only have to wait for the disfiguration and transformation of faces of these evil people into apes and pigs, and also for the showers of stone to rain from the heavens.
(6) Hadhrat Ali Bin Abi Taalib (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “When my Ummah indulges in fifteen misdeeds, calamities will settle on them. Among these are singing girls and musical instruments.” (Tirmizi)
(7) Sahl Bin Sa’d (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “There will befall this Ummat earthquakes, disfigurement of faces and showers of stones.’ It was said: ‘O Rasulullah! When will this happen?’ Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: ‘When singing girls become in profusion and liquor is made lawful.” (Ibn Maajah)
Numerous Sahaabah have narrated Ahaadith in which Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) warned of disasters overwhelming the Ummah as a consequence of the profusion of music, singing and singing girls. Among these Sahaabah are: Hadhrat Abu Maalik Ash’ari, Hadhrat Imraan Bin Husain, Hadhrat Abu Hurairah, Hadhrat Ali, Hadhrat Sahl Bin Sa’d As-Saaidi, Hadhrat Ubaadah Bin Saamit, Hadhrat Abu Umaamah, Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas, Hadhrat Saeed Bin Khudri, Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Bishr, Hadhrat Anas, Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan Bin Saabit and Hadhrat Aishah (ridhwaanullaahi alayhim aj-maeen).
(8) Hadhrat Naafi’ (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates: “Once when Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) heard the sound of a shepherd’s flute, he placed his fingers in both ears (to block the sound of the music), and he diverted his mount from that path. (As they rode on), he would say: ‘O Naafi’, can you still hear (the sound)?’ I would say: ‘Yes.’ He would then continue riding. only when I said: ‘I can no longer hear it’, did he remove his fingers from his ears. Then he returned to the road. He then said: ‘I saw Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) doing like this when he had heard the flute of a shepherd.” (Ahmad and Abu Dawood)
This was the reaction of the devotees of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). They could not tolerate the voice of shaitaan. When music dinned into their ears, they literally plugged their ears with their fingers. By what stretch of reasoning and on what basis of shame and honesty can it be claimed that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) had permitted music and singing? He had described it as the voice of shaitaan. He would plug his ears to block the sound of shaitaan’s voice entering his ears.
(9) Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates: “Verily, Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) made haraam liquor, gambling, the musical drum and the tambourine. And, every intoxicant is haraam.” (Ahmad and Abu Dawood)
(10) Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Verily, Allah has made haraam liquor, gambling, the musical drum, and every intoxicant is haraam.” (Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Baihqi, etc.)
(11) Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated: “The musical drum (tablah) is haraam. Liquor is haraam, and musical instruments are haraam.” (Kaf-fur Ruaa’)
(12) Hadhrat Ibn Mas’ud (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated: “Verily, Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) heard a man singing one night. He then said: ‘His Salaat is unacceptable! His Salaat is unacceptable! His Salaat is unacceptable!” (Nailul Autaar)
(13) Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Listening to music and singing is sinful. Sitting at such gatherings is fisq (immoral transgression). Deriving pleasure from it is kufr.” (Nailul Autaar)
(14) Hadhrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “I have been sent (by Allah) to destroy musical instruments……..The earning of a male singer and a female singer is haraam. The earning of zina is haraam. It is incumbent on Allah not to allow a body nourished by haraam, entry into Jahannum.” (Kaf-fur Ruaa’)
The evil of music and singing is sufficiently abominable to warrant it being lumped together with zina (fornication). one Hadith describes singing as “the spell of shaitaan.”
(15) Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “I have been sent (by Allah Ta’ala) to destroy the musical drum (tablah) and the flute.” (Jam’ul Jawaami’)
The tablah and other forms of musical drums are not to be confused with the duff for which there is limited permissibility.
(16) Hadhrat Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The earning of a singer is haraam and her singing is haraam.” (Nailul Autaar)
(17) Hadhrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) said: “Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) prohibited beating of the duff (drum) and the sound of the flute.” (Nailul Autaar)
From this Hadith as well as others, the ambiguity about the duff is eliminated. It is clear from several Ahaadith that the general ruling of prohibition applies to even the duff. However, an exception has been made for only the duff for the Days of Eid and marriage occasions provided no haraam acts are committed. This Hadith has the effect of abrogation. It cancels out the other narrations in which the duff was allowed. The fact that Hadhrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) and other Sahaabah too propagated the general prohibition of the duff even after the demise of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is sufficient substantiation for the abrogating force of this Hadith as well as other Ahaadith which also mention the prohibition of the duff.
(18) Hadhrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated: “Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) forbade beating the duff, playing the harp and blowing the flute.” (Kanzul Ummaal)
(19) Hadhrat Ibn Mas’ud (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Verily, singing generates hypocrisy in the heart just as water causes farm-produce to grow”. (Baihqi)
(20) Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Love for singing germinates hypocrisy in the heart just as water causes plants to grow.”
(21) Hadhrat Ibn Mas’ud (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Beware of listening to musical instruments and singing, for verily, both these acts germinate nifaaq (hypocrisy) in the heart just as water causes vegetables to grow.” (Kaf-fur Ru’aa’)
(22) Hadhrat Anas (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Whoever sits and listens to a singing girl, Allah will pour molten lead into his ears on the Day of Qiyaamah.” (Ibn Asaakir)
On what basis now can the permissibility of music and singing be argued? The severity of the punishment should be an adequate deterrent to abstain even if some narrations indicate permissibility.
(23) Hadhrat Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Whoever dies while he has a singing slave girl, do not perform Janaazah Salaat for him.” (Haakim)
(24) Safwaan Bin Umayyah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Amr Bin Qurrah said (to Rasulullah – sallallahu alayhi wasallam): “I am very unfortunate. I do not see any way for acquiring my rizq except by means of my duff. Therefore, grant me permission to sing (i.e. with my duff) such songs which will be devoid of any immorality (evil).’ Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) replied: “I do not give you permission. There is no honour and no goodness (in what you are saying). O enemy of Allah! You are a liar. Most certainly, Allah has ordained for you halaal rizq, but you have chosen what Allah has made haraam for you in place of what He has made halaal for you of the sustenance He has decreed for you.” (Baihqi, Tibraani, Dailmi)
The fact that this person sought permission for singing with his duff is abundant and clear testimony for his awareness of the prohibition, hence he requested permission. If music and singing were lawful, there would not have been the need for him to seek permission from Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). No one had asked Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) to farm or to trade. Anyone who inclined to these professions would readily become involved therein. Since these are permissible activities, there was no need to seek permission. But not so with music and singing. The awareness of the prohibition of the voice of shaitaan constrained the man to seek exemption and permission. But he was very harshly rebuffed by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who branded him “the enemy of Allah”. This Hadith also refutes the contention of the permissibility of ‘good’ songs – songs which are devoid of immoral content. The Hadith is also an adequate response for those who in this age believe that without dealing in bank-riba, it is not possible to progress financially. They deceive themselves into believing that sufficient halaal avenues for the acquisition of halaal rizq no longer exist. Those who proffer such contentions are termed ‘enemies of Allah’ by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). Allah Ta’ala has ordained halaal ways for our sustenance. Whoever avers the contrary is a liar.
Man in his greed substitutes the halaal ways and means for haraam methods, labouring under the extreme misconception of gaining abundant wealth by means of the unlawful ways he has appropriated for himself. Ultimately he will be frustrated and fail in his endeavours to achieve what he has targeted. one will not gain a cent more than the divinely stipulated and decreed amount.
(25) Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “On the Day of Qiyaamah, Allah Azza Wa Jal will proclaim: “Where are those who had protected their ears and their eyes from the musical instruments of shaitaan?” (Allah Ta’ala will instruct the Malaaikah): “Separate them (from the multitudes of people).” They (the Angels) will separate them, and have them seated on dunes of musk and ambergris then Allah Ta’ala will say to the Malaaikah: “Recite to them My Tasbeeh and My Tamjeed.” The Malaaikah will then recite to them with such beautiful voices, the likes of which no one had ever heard.”
This Hadith has been narrated by Allaamah Ibn Hajar Makki from Dailmi. The Sahaabi narrating it is Hadhrat Ibn Abbaas (radhiyallahu anhu). Allaamah Ali Muttaqi also narrates this Hadith, but from the Sahaabi, Hadhrat Jaabir (radhiyallahu anhu)-Kanzul Ummaal. Allamah Muhammad Bin Muhammad Maghribi narrates this Hadith from Hadhrat Bin Al-Munkadir (Jam’ul Fawaaid). Imaam Tha-aalabi also narrates it from Muhammad Bin Al-Munkadir, but from Ibn Wahab. – (Jawaahirul Hassaan)
Those who indulge in the haraam music and singing of this world, will be denied the music of Jannat.
(26) Hadhrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Whoever listens to the sound of singing, he will not be given permission to listen to the (beautiful) voices of the Ruhaaniyyeen in Jannat.” When it was asked: ‘Who are the Ruhaaniyyeen?’ Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The Qaaris of Jannat.” (Kanzul Ummaal)
In his Tafseer, Imaam Qurtubi comments: “We have mentioned this Hadith in Kitaabut Tathkirah along with other similar examples. Thus, he who consumes wine will be denied the pure drink (of Jannat) in the Aakhirah. He who wears silk will not wear silk in the Aakhirah, etc. All this is correct in meaning……”
(27) Hadhrat Ibn Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates: “Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) prohibited singing and listening to singing, and (he also prohibited) gossip.” (Kaf-fur Ruaa’)
(28) Zaid Bin Arqam (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates: “Once a youth while singing passed by Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) who was walking in a street of Madinah. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: ‘Alas! O young man! Why do you not sing with the Qur’aan (i.e. recite it beautifully instead of singing songs)?’ He repeated this statement several times.” (Dailmi)
(29) Hadhrat Abu Umaamah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “When someone raises his voice with singing, Allah sends two shaitaans who sit on his shoulders striking his breast with their heels until he stops (singing).” (Tibraani)
(30) Hadhrat Abdur Rahmaan Bin Auf (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “I have forbidden two ignorant immoral voices: (The first)- the sounds of futility at the time of merrymaking, and the musical instruments of shaitaan. (The second)- the wailing sounds at the time of calamity when the face is struck and the garments are torn.” (Haakim in Mustadrak)
(31) Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The bell is among the musical instruments of shaitaan.” (Abu Dawood)
(32) Kisaan narrates that Hadhrat Muaawiyyah (radhiyallahu anhu) stated in his Khutbah: “Verily, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) forbade seven things, and I too forbid you from these things. Know that these things are: Loud wailing (on occasions of death), singing, pictures………” (Tibraani)
(33) In a lengthy Hadith narrated by Hadhrat Abu Umaamah (radhiyallahu anhu), it is mentioned that on the occasion of the expulsion of shaitaan from the heaven and his exile to earth, he (Iblees) supplicated to Allah Ta’ala: “O my Rabb! You have exiled me to earth and you have made me accursed………Now, therefore bestow to me a caller (who can call to my path).’ Allah Ta’ala said: “(Your caller) is musical instruments………..” (Tibraani)
(34) Allaamah Qurtubi, in his Tafseer, narrates the following Hadith: “Verily, once when Abdullah Bin Mas’ud (radhiyallahu anhu) heard someone singing, he hastily left the place. This reached Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). He thereupon commented: ‘Indeed, Ibn Umm Abd (i.e. Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud) is an honourable abd (slave ofAllah).”
Two salient facts emerge from this Hadith: one- Hadhrat Abdullah Bin Mas’ud (radhiyallahu anhu) was aware of the prohibition of music and singing, hence he hastily left the place. Two- Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) approved of his action and commended him. This too clearly indicates the evil of singing and music.
(35) Hadhrat Abu Burzah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated: “We were with the Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) on a journey when he heard two men singing. The one was responding to the other (by means of singing poetry). Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) then said: ‘Look who these two are.’ They (the Sahaabah) said: ‘They are so and so (naming them).’ Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) then cursed, saying: ‘O Allah! Cast them upside down in Jahannum.” (Majmauz Zawaaid)
The gravity of the prohibition of singing and music should be apparent from the vehemence of the curse of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam).
(36) Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “Verily, Allah Ta’ala sent me as a Mercy and a Guide to the worlds, and He has commanded me to destroy musical instruments……”
(37) Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrates: “Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: ‘Verily, the bell is of the musical instruments of shaitaan.” (Muslim and Abu Dawood)
(38) Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: “The Malaaikah do no associate with a group in which there is a dog or a bell.” (Muslim and Abu Dawood)
(39) Hadhrat Aishah (radhiyallahu anha) narrated: “Verily, Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) instructed that all bells be cut off from the necks of the camels on the Day of Badr.” (Musnad Ahmad)
(40) Hadhrat Umar (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated: “I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) saying: “Verily, with every bell is a shaitaan.” (Abu Dawood)
The tinkling and jingling of bells are also associated with shaitaani music, hence the stringent prohibition.
Now that these numerous Ahaadith in which Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) severely condemns music and singing has dawned on those who lacked awareness, there cannot be a Muslim with a healthy Imaan who will still believe in the permissibility of the voice of shaitaan.

Brother in Islam said
Salam to you all
Firstly let me start with praising the lyrics in the nasheed of Sami Yusuf which encouraged myself and I am sure many other muslims to strengthen their love for the Prophet
Muhammed Peace be upon him. Sami Yusuf has done this very well. I bought his first album Original! and second one too. ( NOt downlaoded or pirate copy)
I write to you not as a learned scholar of islam but concerned muslim who wishes to be guided and not misguided. I have a heart felt message for you and
Sami Yusuf which you should consider as we are all trying to attain an ultimate goal of entering Jannah. And avoid being a wretched soul and a blessed
soul Inshallah. Although Allah has decreed the outcome of wretched and blessed souls when the souls is blown into the womb after 3 months.
Any how I have seen many interviews were poor Sami Yusuf has encountered the question of music or musical instruments to be unlawful. And Sami Yusuf has done his best to
justify his position as an Artist it is lawful. ( Artist. No I would prefer if one would call himself a Da’ee. One who gives message of Islam and invites us to embrace Islam. As Sami yusuf is not far from this
title of Da’ee). I think in my opinion it would be best if he avoided the question and not comment as he many times does not give reference to the scholars who claim music or musical instruments
are lawful. ( He should know the topic matter and give clear references.) As it only tarnishes your image.
To tackle this negativity I would propose presenting evidence to the fans and those against you that you justify your actions as a Artist or Da’ee using musical instruments. If he presents himself as an artist he causes further problems. As mainstream
artists do not represent the deen of Islam in a good manner. If Sami does not want to represent Islam then he should quote this. That is a choice. But I do not like to see him being attacked on this argument.
If he presents himself as a nasheed singer. He is in the realms of islamic jurisprudence as it is ok. Then the only issue would be the way the nasheed is presented in musical form. I believe
Sami Yusuf has been gifted with a great voice and humble personality and he should position himself as a Nasheed singer and record Nasheeds praising Allah and Prophet Muhammed Peace Be Upon him
without any instruments and use Backing singers to create the pitch of drums, and use a Daf like Ahmed Bukhatir Nasheed Singer. This is my opinion and I give you the following link to ponder on what I
have stated. http://www.islamictube.net/watch/544381287/Sheikh-Yusuf-Estes-on-Music-in-Islam-(part-1
May Allah give you success in this world and the hereafter. ( I have now decided to follow opinion from the above link. As it is clearly proven that the Daf is only the Halal instrument. Use your imagination
and you can add backing singers to create what you need. It will require more talent and hardwork but you have the talent!)
All the best.

Assalaamu’alaiykum,
The following concerns do arise regarding the Duff
1. According to studies in Islamic history, it has been confirmed that the Daff was used and permitted on two occasions i.e. Nikah and Eid.
2. Can anyone give a clear description as to what a Duff is?
The following is then concluded:
1. Most of these Nasheed artists (whatever else you want to call them) do their Nasheeds outside the paramters which is Nikah and Eid.
2. No one has been able to produce a Duff (physically) and produce concrete evidence from the Shariah that the object presented is 100% according to the descriptipon of the Duff.
It must also be born in mind that Nabi Sallallahu’alaiyhiwasallam disapproved of a Sahaabi who wanted permission to sing good songs with the use of a Duff. Please see below which I have posted previously:
Safwaan Bin Umayyah (radhiyallahu anhu) narrated that Amr Bin Qurrah said (to Rasulullah – sallallahu alayhi wasallam): “I am very unfortunate.

I am a Catholic American who has written many works on World Religions and Comparative Religious Mysticism. Recently, I was introduced to the music of Sami Yusuf which I have now introduced upon my website which has had almost 1/4 million visitors. Many people of all religious persuasions from around the world come to this site to ‘find what it is they are seeking.’ Because I am Catholic, although I write about and explain the teachings of many world religions, I took heat for using what can be considered controversial videos and songs on my site.
It is my view that I took heat, not because these were Muslim videos, but because Sami Yusuf demonstrates that the spirit of God is upon Him and anyone who listens knows this immediately. When they know this, if they have previously had a different view of Islam, they go through a profound brain scramble. Everything they’ve believed about Islam which might have been negative is suddenly completely untrue. There is a period of adjustment. The beauty of Islam is suddenly apparent. It’s right in your face.
Isn’t that what Mohammad would have embraced? I’ve studied the Qur’an, the Hadith, the writings of Imam Ghazzali and many other texts on Islam. I’m not a Muslim scholar, but I cannot see how bringing the beauty of Islam into the hearts and minds of Americans, Christians and those of other faiths could harm Islam. On the latter, I believe that the music of Sami Yusuf along with some of the powerful music done with some of his friends, Outlandish, Hamza Robertson – presents a real and profound entry into the shoes of Muslims around the world for those of us who live in countries who are currently participating in wars, persecutions, etc. against Muslims.
If Christians can embrace the beauty of Islam from a music video, doesn’t that in itself denote its worth?
Forgive me for any intrusion, as I said I’m Catholic, and have no Islamic credentials. But I can tell you that seeing and hearing Sami Yusuf’s music has forever changed me. And I’m now posting his work on my website to affect the same change upon those who come to visit.
I think the Prophet Mohammad would not only embrace Sami’s use of musical instruments, but I believe that Mohammad has very likely had a great hand in inspiring him to do what it is he does, for it is clear that Sami Yusuf is an inspired artist. Which means God’s hands, the hands of Allah, are what has brought about these gifts in Mr. Yusuf.
As a writer myself, I have learned much about the nature of inspiration. I know that without God’s inspiration, I can write nothing. When I write, it is only when it ‘comes to me from above.’ When I listen to Sami Yusuf’s music, the first thought that came to my mind was ‘Wow, the spirit of God must be upon him, he could not write that and perform in that way on his own,’ the second thought was, ‘If that is true, then this means that I’ve been missing something about Islam that I NEED to see.’ The third thought became action in that I sought to see more of his work, and the work of his friends – which has only taken me further into this passage I now seek.
Please treat Sami Yusuf well, he is representing Islam and Muslims well around the world in a way I’ve never before seen, and I believe his work will help to unite people of differing faiths, to build respect among different countries, and to allow non-Muslims to see Islam in a beautiful, profoundly new light.
He has a gift, a vocation which obviously comes from God, don’t ask him to deny it. Allow God to work through him, and you will see it bear fruit. I believe this with all my heart, for my heart was changed when I saw ‘Try not to Cry.’
Many Blessings,
Marilynn Hughes

to brothers and sisters who r in favor of the perception that music is halal,
what do u say about RasoolAllah sallalaho alihi wasallam’s hadith:
“music sows the seed of nifaaq (hypocrisy) in the hearts!”(sunnan abi dawd)
what do u say about:
“some people will rise in My Ummah who will declare prostitution, silk , alcohol and musical instruments as halal”.(hadith sahi bukhari kitabul ashraba)
DEAR BROTHER SAMY, ISLAM IS NOT THE PROPERTY OF MUFTIS AND SCHOLARS,ISLAM IS MINE ISLAM IS YOURS , ISLAM IS EVERYONES …ALL THE THINGS HAVE BEEN CLEARLY EXPLAINED EITHER THEY ARE HALAL OR HARAM IN QURAN AND HADITH..AND AS FAR AS THE CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES ARE CONCERNED,THEN WHAT WILL BE YOUR ACT IF DOCTOR PRESCRIBES U A MEDICINE TO CURE A MINOR DISORDER LETS SAY :COLD..AND THE DOCTOR ALSO SAYS THAT THERE IS A SUSPECTON THAT THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE SERIOUS NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS…THEN WILL U TAKE A CHANCE OF USING THE MED ? OR WILL U SWITCH TO THE ALTERNATE MEDICINE HAVING NO SIGNIFICANT SIDE EFFECTS???…WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH LIFE OF THIS WORLD FOR OBEYING THE COMMANDMENTS OF OUR GOD ..AND ITS THE FINAL CHANCE WE CANNOT TAKE ANY RISKS…FATWA IS ANOTHER THING AND “TAQWA” IS ANOTHER..

I stopped listening to all sorts of songs since i heard brother sami’s nasheeds and all i can say is that he has been a great influence on me and i have started praying my prayers again, Mashallah. Well, i clearly know music is haraam however brother sami’s nasheeds are making today’s youngsters understand their religion. Salaam,
I feel yvonne ridley is correct about girls going over the top ion concerts. You only have to go on to youtube and view some of Sami Yusufs concerts to know what she is talking about. I do listen to Sami Yusuf but I feel when Allah (swt) and Muhammad(saw) are mentioned in a song then only one percussion instrument should be used. This opinion is supported by most sunni scholars. Another thing I find frustrating is Sami Yusufs inability or stubborness to accept the fact that girls do go over the top and that it is a problem. There are ways to show love and admiration- shouting screaming and dancing in some cases is totally un-Islamic. I shall leave with one of the many hadiths regarding music:
`There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful; fornication, wine-drinking and the use of ma`aazif ( musical instruments ).

you are owsome Sami Yusuf and I 100% am on your side and i totally agree with you. Thank you for standing up for this. My name is Hawa, I am 16 years old and I am from Chechnya. I live in the United States. I am your number one fan, and i think that you are a vwery nice respectful and very handsome man that i have never met in my life. Thank you again and take care and I LOVE YOU VERY MUCH, don’t forget that many people agree with what you wrote on this letter .
Good luck to you in everything that you do in life and may Allah bless you, and every step you take. Assalamu Alaykum.
trust me i know it gets a lot worst than that. the islam channel who promote people like this need to be spoken out against also, just watch their so called nasheed show (top of the pops), maybe not a good idea.
we can alway find a scholar to give us a dodgy oppinion to justify anything we want to do just to make us feel better with ourselves. on that note i think i’ll go and have a glass of wine with my neighbours wife while she gyrates to sami yousif. im shaw that a difference of oppinion too.

salaam all,
I think there is two sides to the story. I am a converted muslim and guessss how I became interested in Islam and how I learned more from Islam? It was not by the Qu’raan, which of course would have been ideal.. but well I don’t understand Arab at all so listening to the Qu’raan recited was beautiful experience but I could not understand it. So I first started listening to artist like Sami Yusuf. Then gradually I found out more and more, converted and now I agree with scholars that say music is actually haram, it should not be our ideal! So I am not listening to music anymore or at least I try not to.
But well what I also think is that people take on Islam step by step. We are living in very difficult times, we are living in very long time without any prophet coming to us anymore to make things clear for us again so almost anybody is making sin. If it is not by making music it is by calling each other (including other muslims) lyars or even kuffaar. If we are so stubborn in defending the hadith that talk about music – and we should be if we want to speak truth – then why do we forget about hadith urging the Ummah not to split in sects or not gossiping or speaking bad about each other (for example: a muslim is a persoon from whose tongue or hands another person is safe). Remember also that Qu’raan itself was revealed in 23 years and people did not immediately did every single thing right, they need guidance and this guidance was done in good way by the Prophet pbuh. We are not angels, we are all striving to be our best! Try to make yourself better before being harsh on somebody else. But still I think it is necesary to say the truth and this is better not listen to musical instruments, try to replace with something different like beautiful singing or nature sounds or take a walk in nature listen to real birds
.
Also what I thought about music, when I hear for example the song ‘try not to cry’ I think it is nice to listen to a beautiful message but it is better to take some action and go visit a neighbour who is in reality crying and needs some help rather than sit back relax listening to music.

Esteemed brother and Esteemed sisters in Islam
To be honnest reading the above it clear Cut that brother “Sammi” is only “Artist” as he describes him self not a nasheed artist not a islamic artist just an “Artist”, okay fair point taken lets look at this this way first, his first nasheeds has minimal or no music then gradually calim to fame more and more instruments came in to his nasheeds may be these are not nasheed they are just songs??? its ironic then he refers to Classical scholars i mean which scholars are these he dare not to mention!!!! look its a sign of Qiymat you will try and justify or make allow which haaram simple as that.
He may be trying to reach to the “Western Civilisation” to the “Youth” with his jazzy music or nasheeds sorry but i my self used to listen to alot of music but allhumdullaiah i have stopped it does take time i listen to the Quran and islamic talks, but instead brother “Sammi” likes to poses for photos shoots to get a PERFECT PICTURE or PICTURE PERFECT pic for his ALBUM COVER!! then obviously teen muslim girls with hijaab go crazy at the concerts etc dont you this is haaram when the maases are going to towards wrong first of all you must try and stop them phyically then verbally then if you cant do the previous things then insure your heart is against it.
So After Taraweeh in Ramadhan Turn on the So called islamic radio, all his nasheeds are on with music i dont want to listen to this i mean this is the month of Ramadhan the most appalling this is we cant be even “SIMPLE” a SIMPLE MUSLIM forget about been a docter or tech analyst or anything in Ramadhan we should simplify our selfs and run towards ALLAH SWT instead we promote “SAMMI” in Ramadhan may be one day i can afford a photo shoot like !! inshALLAH (thats a joke) the thing is i could go on and on and on but inshALLAH brothers and sister will get the jist of what i am trying to say OUT WITH THE MUSIC in with the Islamic talks

The likes of sami shuld go back to the Sunna of the prophet, instead of making lawful what the sunnah of our beloved prophet made unlawful.
islam is too pure to be mixed.
